BN Children's Nursing
About this course
Children's nursing is a field of nursing practice dedicated to the care of children and young people from birth through adolescence, and it demands both a thorough understanding of childhood development and health and the ability to communicate effectively with children, families and young people in what are often frightening and distressing circumstances. Children's nurses work in neonatal units, paediatric wards, community settings, schools and specialist services, supporting children through acute illness, chronic conditions, surgery and end-of-life care. At Wrexham University, this three-year full-time degree leads to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a children's nurse, combining academic learning with clinical placement hours from the beginning of the programme. You will study child development and family-centred care alongside the clinical knowledge needed to assess and manage paediatric health conditions across a range of settings and severity. The curriculum uses a variety of learning methods, from problem-based learning and simulated practice to ward-based clinical placements, developing your clinical reasoning and professional judgement progressively throughout the degree. Safeguarding, medicines management, the legal and ethical frameworks governing nursing care and the specific challenges of communicating with children at different developmental stages are all addressed. A typical entry tariff of around 120 points is expected. Graduates register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as children's nurses and enter NHS employment in paediatric settings including acute hospital wards, neonatal units, community children's nursing teams, school nursing, child and adolescent mental health services and specialist outpatient departments. Career development paths include specialist practice, nurse prescribing, advanced clinical roles, management and education. The profession offers deep personal satisfaction and long-term career development in a field where skilled and compassionate nurses make a profound difference to children's experience of illness and recovery.
