MA Chinese Studies - Russian
About this course
Chinese and Russian are two of the world's most geopolitically significant languages, each giving access to a civilisation of immense historical depth, literary richness, and contemporary importance. Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world by number of native speakers, and China's economic and political influence continues to grow. Russian is the dominant language of the world's largest country and of a cultural tradition that encompasses some of the most significant literature, music, and philosophy of the past three centuries. Studying both gives you rare depth and versatility in two areas of exceptional strategic and cultural importance. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme develops your proficiency in both languages alongside serious engagement with the cultures, histories, and contemporary contexts of China and the Russian-speaking world. Chinese studies at St Andrews goes beyond the traditional language and literature model to encompass visual and popular cultures, giving you a broad understanding of Chinese cultural life. Your Russian studies similarly develops linguistic competence alongside cultural, historical, and literary knowledge. A year abroad is central to the programme, deepening your language skills and cultural understanding through direct immersion. Graduates with proficiency in Chinese and Russian are in exceptional demand across diplomacy, international business, intelligence and security agencies, journalism, translation and interpreting, and academic institutions. The combination of two major strategic languages is distinctive and opens roles in government, international organisations, and the growing range of businesses operating across both Chinese and Russian-speaking markets. Postgraduate study in Chinese studies, Russian and East European studies, translation, and international relations is a natural progression for those who wish to specialise.
