About this course
English and creative writing together form one of the most complete programmes available for anyone who wants to engage deeply with the written word, both as a reader and as a writer. English literature develops your ability to read closely and critically across a wide range of texts, periods and traditions, building an understanding of how language works, how form and content interact and how literary works are shaped by and respond to the worlds that produced them. Creative writing gives you the opportunity to apply those insights in your own practice, developing a voice and a craft across poetry, fiction, non-fiction and other forms. At Coventry University, this part-time programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you professional experience and international exposure alongside your studies. The programme is structured to allow your ideas to shape your learning, with an emphasis on developing your creative identity alongside rigorous critical understanding. You will read widely, write regularly and receive feedback on your work in an environment designed to be supportive of developing writers at every stage. The year abroad gives you the chance to pursue your creative and critical work in a different literary culture, and the placement connects your academic study to professional contexts where writing is practised. Graduates go on to careers in publishing, journalism, copywriting, content creation, communications, education, arts administration, script writing and a wide range of other fields where fluency with language and the ability to craft effective prose are essential. The critical thinking and communication skills developed are genuinely transferable, and many graduates enter careers well beyond the creative industries. Further study in creative writing, English literature, publishing, journalism or education is available for those who want to specialise or pursue academic careers.
