BEng Civil Engineering
About this course
Civil engineering is the profession responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the physical infrastructure that societies depend on. Roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, water treatment systems, airports, and urban drainage networks are all the work of civil engineers, who must combine structural, geotechnical, environmental, and project management knowledge to deliver projects that are safe, sustainable, and fit for purpose. As cities grow and climate change intensifies pressure on infrastructure, the demand for well-trained civil engineers has never been greater. At Queen's University Belfast this three-year full-time degree covers the planning, design, sustainability, and management of society's infrastructure, taught by staff engaged in high-quality, industry-linked research. You will study structural engineering, foundations, water engineering, transportation, environmental impact assessment, and project management, developing both the technical knowledge and the professional judgment that civil engineering practice demands. The programme takes sustainability seriously, recognising that the civil engineering profession has a central role to play in achieving sustainable living in an increasingly urbanised world. A year abroad gives you the opportunity to engage with civil engineering challenges and practice in a different national context. Queen's strong industry connections in Northern Ireland provide additional professional exposure. Graduates go on to careers in infrastructure consultancies, construction companies, government agencies, water utilities, transportation authorities, and environmental organisations. Professional registration as a Chartered Civil Engineer through the Institution of Civil Engineers is a natural ambition, and many graduates pursue this through postgraduate study or professional development programmes. The profession offers a career of tangible impact, as the infrastructure you help design and build shapes the quality of life of millions of people.
