BEng Civil Engineering
About this course
Civil engineering is the discipline that designs and builds the infrastructure on which societies depend. Roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, water supply networks, drainage systems, coastal defences, and urban structures are all within its scope, making civil engineers essential to both the maintenance of existing infrastructure and the construction of the new systems that growing populations and changing climates will require. It is a discipline that combines rigorous physical science with practical problem-solving and an awareness of the environmental and social contexts in which infrastructure sits. At the University of Southampton, this three-year full-time BEng provides a solid grounding in civil engineering design and application. You will develop the skills necessary to design and build creative and effective solutions for the built environment, working across topics including structural engineering, geotechnics, hydraulics, transportation, and environmental engineering. Southampton's engineering school is one of the UK's leading centres for engineering education and research, and the civil engineering programme benefits from that research culture and from strong connections to the industry. You will develop both the analytical capabilities and the design and project skills that professional civil engineers need, working on problems that connect to the real challenges of sustainable infrastructure development and urban planning that the profession currently faces. You will graduate with a strong technical foundation and an understanding of how engineering solutions must be developed in the context of environmental sustainability, safety, and social benefit. Graduates go on to careers as civil engineers, structural engineers, transportation engineers, geotechnical engineers, water engineers, and project managers across the public and private sectors. The BEng provides a foundation for chartered engineer status with the Institution of Civil Engineers and for postgraduate study in civil engineering or a specialist discipline. Southampton graduates go on to work on major infrastructure, urban development, and environmental engineering projects in the UK and internationally.
