BA Classics (Ancient Greek) with Study in Europe
About this course
Ancient Greek civilisation has shaped Western thought, literature, science, philosophy, and political theory more profoundly than almost any other tradition, and the study of its language and literature gives direct access to texts that have defined what it means to pursue knowledge, justice, and beauty for more than two millennia. A degree in Classics with a focus on Ancient Greek develops advanced skills in close reading, translation, linguistic analysis, and critical interpretation, alongside a deep engagement with the historical and cultural world from which these texts emerged. At Warwick, this four-year full-time degree allows you to pursue your interest in the languages, literature, and thought of ancient Greece and Rome, situating them within the broader cultural, social, and political contexts of the ancient Mediterranean world. You will study Greek language and literature alongside the history, philosophy, and cultural practices of the ancient world, developing analytical and communicative skills that are highly transferable. A distinctive feature of this programme is that you will spend your third year studying abroad at one of Warwick's partner universities, engaging with Classics or related disciplines in an international academic environment that broadens both your intellectual perspective and your personal development. Classics graduates are widely recognised by employers for the rigour and versatility of their training. The ability to work with complex texts, to translate and interpret with care, and to construct sustained arguments from close engagement with evidence is valued across law, the civil service, journalism, publishing, education, finance, and many other professional fields. Careers in heritage, museums, academic research, and broadcasting are also common. Postgraduate study in classical languages, ancient history, philosophy, or archaeology is a well-established next step, and many Classics graduates go on to doctoral research or to professional qualifications in law, teaching, or related fields.
