MA Classics/Mathematics
About this course
Classics and mathematics is an unusual and intellectually bracing combination, bringing together the study of the ancient world with the most rigorous of formal sciences. Classics encompasses the languages, literature, history, philosophy, and material culture of ancient Greece and Rome, demanding close engagement with texts in their original languages and an understanding of how those civilisations have shaped the Western intellectual tradition. Mathematics develops abstract reasoning, formal proof, and quantitative analysis to levels of precision that few other disciplines require. Together they train a mind that can be both creative and exact. This four-year, full-time programme at the University of Glasgow leads to a Master of Arts with Honours. You will be able to engage with Latin and Greek at whatever level suits your background, and the programme allows genuine depth in both disciplines. You will study mathematics across analysis, algebra, probability, and other areas appropriate to the level you reach, and engage in Classics with literature, ancient history, philosophy, and archaeology. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study at a university in another country, whether pursuing your classical interests in a Mediterranean context or engaging with mathematics in a different academic tradition. Graduates of this combination have an intellectual profile that stands out: the linguistic, historical, and cultural depth of Classics combined with the analytical rigour of mathematics signals unusual intellectual range. Common career destinations include law, finance, the civil service, academia, education, data analysis, and consultancy. The critical reasoning and communication skills developed through Classics, combined with the quantitative and problem-solving abilities from mathematics, are valued wherever complex thinking and clear expression both matter. Postgraduate study in mathematics, ancient history, philosophy, or classical languages is a natural extension for those who wish to pursue specialist academic careers.
