MA Classics/Scottish History

About this course

Classics brings together the study of the literature, history, art, material culture and languages of ancient Greece and Rome, civilisations whose influence on Western thought, politics, philosophy, literature and law is so deep that they continue to shape the present in ways that repay careful study. Scottish History examines Scotland from its earliest periods through to the modern era, exploring a distinct national experience that includes Gaelic and Norse cultural traditions, the Reformation, the Union with England, the Clearances, industrialisation and Scotland's evolving constitutional position. Together, these disciplines offer two rich and methodologically complementary ways of understanding the past. At the University of Glasgow, this part-time programme, which includes a year abroad, allows you to pursue both fields simultaneously, developing skills in classical languages alongside historical analysis and the interpretation of diverse primary sources. In Classics, the study of Latin and Greek language is available at any level, giving you access to the original texts of authors including Cicero, Thucydides, Virgil and Homer alongside the material culture of the ancient Mediterranean. Scottish History modules take you into the archives and historiographical debates that surround Scotland's past, developing your research skills and your ability to work with primary historical evidence. The year abroad provides the opportunity to extend your studies in a different academic environment. Graduates in Classics and Scottish History go on to careers in teaching, museum and heritage work, archival and library roles, journalism, publishing, heritage tourism, the civil service and law. The critical thinking, research skills, close reading ability and capacity for extended written argument developed through these disciplines are genuinely transferable. Many students continue to postgraduate study in classical studies, history, archaeology or heritage management, and some pursue academic careers in these fields.
