BSc Clinical Exercise Therapy (with Foundation Year)
About this course
Clinical exercise therapy is a growing allied health profession that uses scientifically prescribed physical activity and exercise as a therapeutic intervention for people with chronic diseases, disabilities, and long-term health conditions. It sits at the boundary of sport and exercise science and healthcare, drawing on physiology, anatomy, clinical assessment, and exercise prescription to support conditions including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, mental health conditions, and cancer recovery. As the evidence base for exercise as medicine continues to grow, the demand for qualified practitioners who can deliver safe and effective exercise therapy in clinical and community settings is increasing. At Bedfordshire this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, making it accessible to students who may not have studied the relevant sciences at advanced level. Across the full programme you will develop knowledge of exercise physiology, anatomy, pathophysiology, clinical assessment, and the design and delivery of therapeutic exercise programmes for people with specific health conditions. You will also develop the professional and communication skills needed to work effectively within healthcare teams and to support patients in making exercise a sustainable part of their lives. Practical experience is central to the programme, and you will build clinical skills through placements and applied projects. Clinical exercise therapy graduates work in NHS cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programmes, community exercise referral schemes, physiotherapy support roles, sport and exercise medicine clinics, and the growing private sector provision of exercise therapy services. The discipline is relatively new and formal registration frameworks are still developing, but the demand for practitioners is growing rapidly as health systems recognise the value of exercise in managing long-term conditions. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in exercise physiology, physiotherapy, or health sciences to develop advanced clinical expertise.
