BA Communications and Film & TV
About this course
Communications and Film and Television is a combination that examines the full range of modern media from a perspective that is both critical and practical. Communications encompasses the study of how information is created, distributed, and received across media platforms, including print, broadcast, digital, and social media, asking questions about power, representation, ideology, and the social effects of different communication forms. Film and television studies focuses more specifically on screen media as artistic, commercial, and cultural forms, analysing how moving images tell stories and shape the way we understand ourselves and the world. At Nottingham Trent University, this part-time programme takes an interdisciplinary approach, combining critical thinking with creative practice and close attention to context. You will study the theory, practice, and socio-cultural implications of communications, film, and television, learning to recognise how these media forms have their own distinctive traditions, styles, and ideologies, and how they function as important forms of communication that both reflect and shape social values. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and work placements, giving you direct professional experience in media, communications, or related industries alongside your academic study. Graduates go on to careers in broadcasting, journalism, digital media production, public relations, advertising, content creation, and cultural research. The combination of critical analytical skills and practical media knowledge is valued across a range of organisations, from commercial media companies and creative agencies to public broadcasters, charities, and local government communications teams. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in media studies, film studies, journalism, or communications, developing their expertise or entering research careers.
