MA Comparative Literature and Italian
About this course
Comparative Literature and Italian is a combination that opens literary study across cultural and linguistic boundaries while also developing deep competence in one of Europe's great languages. Comparative literature rejects the idea that national literatures should be studied in isolation, instead examining texts of any genre, period, and language for what they share, how they differ, and how they have influenced one another across cultural frontiers. Italian adds the linguistic and cultural depth that comes from engaging with a specific tradition in its original language, giving you direct access to a literary heritage spanning Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Machiavelli, Leopardi, and the rich output of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year, full-time programme includes a year abroad, which is central to both the linguistic and comparative dimensions of your degree. The comparative literature component draws on expertise from across the School of Modern Languages and beyond, encouraging you to read without borders, pushing at the boundaries of textual analysis and engaging with world literature across periods and genres, all with the support of translations as well as original language reading. The Italian component develops your language skills to an advanced level while deepening your cultural and literary knowledge of the Italian tradition. St Andrews' reputation for scholarly rigour and its international academic environment provide an outstanding setting for this demanding and rewarding combination. Graduates of Comparative Literature and Italian pursue careers in academia, translation, journalism, publishing, cultural diplomacy, international organisations, arts administration, and education. The ability to read and analyse literature across cultural and linguistic boundaries is a distinctive and valued skill in any profession that requires cross-cultural understanding. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in comparative literature, Italian studies, translation, or literary theory, building specialist expertise for research or curatorial careers.
