About this course

Computer networks and security form the invisible infrastructure on which the digital world depends. Every internet connection, cloud service, video call, banking transaction and online interaction relies on the design, operation and protection of networked systems. As digital connectivity has expanded, so too has the complexity of keeping those systems reliable, private and secure against a growing range of threats. A degree in this field gives you the technical knowledge to build, manage and protect the network infrastructure that organisations and individuals depend on. At the University of Portsmouth you will study the principles and practices of computer networking alongside the security disciplines needed to protect networked systems from attack. You will engage with topics spanning network architecture and protocols, wireless and mobile communications, cloud computing, cryptography, network security, ethical hacking and the governance frameworks that organisations use to manage cyber risk. The programme runs full time over three years and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work-placement experience, giving you a substantial combination of international and professional experience alongside your academic studies. These structured opportunities to work in real network and security environments consistently strengthen both technical competence and professional confidence. You will develop practical skills in network configuration and troubleshooting, security testing and incident response, alongside the theoretical understanding needed to adapt to the rapidly evolving landscape of networked technology and cyber threats. Graduates from computer networks and security programmes move into careers as network engineers, security analysts, systems administrators, penetration testers, cybersecurity consultants and IT infrastructure specialists across public and private sector organisations. The demand for skilled professionals in both networking and cybersecurity is strong and sustained. Postgraduate study in cybersecurity, computer science or network engineering is also a well-established route.
