BSc Computer Science (Data Science and AI) with Industrial Placement
About this course
Data science and artificial intelligence have become two of the most consequential fields in contemporary technology, driving advances in healthcare, finance, climate modelling, language processing, autonomous systems and almost every other domain that handles large quantities of information. Data science brings together statistics, computing and domain knowledge to extract meaning from data. Artificial intelligence develops the algorithms and systems that allow computers to learn, reason, perceive and act. Together they represent both a powerful set of technical skills and a rapidly evolving set of intellectual challenges. At the University of Dundee this five-year, full-time programme emphasises the application of these disciplines to real problems, building the conviction that data science and AI are most valuable when used to make a genuine difference. You will study the mathematical and computational foundations of machine learning, statistical modelling, neural networks, natural language processing and data engineering, alongside the ethical and societal questions that arise when AI systems are deployed in the world. The programme is extended to five years through an industrial placement, giving you substantial professional experience in a data science or AI role before you graduate, and it also includes a year abroad for those who wish to study at an international partner institution. This combination of rigorous academic training and extended industry exposure makes the degree distinctive. Graduates move into careers as data scientists, machine learning engineers, AI researchers, data engineers, business intelligence analysts and technical product managers across technology companies, financial services, healthcare, government and research institutions. Many also pursue postgraduate study, including research degrees in machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing or related areas, or conversion into specialist roles in academia, public-sector data teams or technology firms at the frontier of applied AI.
