About this course

Computer science is the rigorous study of computation: what can be computed, how efficiently, and how to design and build systems that compute reliably and securely. It rests on mathematical foundations that include logic, combinatorics, probability, and the theory of algorithms and data structures, and it builds from these towards the engineering of software, the design of programming languages, the architecture of computer systems, the study of artificial intelligence, and the management of large bodies of data. It is one of the most consequential disciplines of our time, underpinning nearly every aspect of modern life. At the University of Hull you will study this four-year full-time degree with a typical entry tariff of 104 points. Hull has invested significantly in its computing facilities and the programme is designed to develop both theoretical understanding and practical programming skills across a range of languages, tools, and application domains. Across the four years you will study algorithms and data structures, software engineering principles, database systems, computer networks and security, operating systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and the mathematical foundations that underpin all of these areas. You will build software systems individually and in teams, developing the collaborative working and communication skills that professional software development demands. The four-year duration gives you additional time to develop depth and to take on more substantial projects in the later years. Computer science graduates are in exceptional and sustained demand across every sector of the economy. Roles include software developer, systems architect, data scientist, machine learning engineer, cybersecurity analyst, database administrator, and technology consultant. The four-year programme gives graduates additional experience and often a higher level of technical maturity that employers value. Further study at master's or PhD level is an option for those seeking to specialise in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, or high-performance computing, and is a prerequisite for research and academic careers.
