About this course

Contemporary craft combined with music production brings together two creative disciplines that share a concern with skill, materiality and the making of things, even though the materials and techniques involved are very different. Contemporary craft is focused on hands-on design and making: developing the practical skills of working with materials such as ceramics, textiles, metal or wood alongside the conceptual thinking that gives craft objects their meaning and direction. Music production is concerned with the creation of recorded sound, using digital audio workstations, recording equipment, synthesis and processing to construct music from raw materials, whether that is live performance, samples or pure synthesis. At Liverpool Hope University you will study contemporary craft and music production over three years of full-time study, in a creative community that values both the physical act of making and the sonic art of music production. The craft strand aims to develop you as a maker, supporting you towards specialised practice and innovative project work. The music production strand develops technical proficiency in recording and production tools alongside the musical intelligence that gives your work its distinctive character. A sandwich year and the opportunity for a year abroad extend the programme with professional and international experience, and work placement is integrated throughout. The typical tariff of 120 reflects a programme open to students with genuine creative commitment and the ambition to develop their practice across two demanding disciplines. Graduates develop creative careers in a wide range of directions. Craft graduates work as professional makers, designers, studio artists, educators and arts administrators. Music production graduates work as producers, sound engineers, music technology educators, audio post-production specialists and composers for media. Many develop portfolio careers that draw on both areas of expertise, in contexts including arts education, community arts, sound installation, gallery-based practice and interdisciplinary performance. Postgraduate study in either discipline provides routes to higher-level practice or research.
