About this course

Costume for performance is a specialist discipline at the intersection of fashion, craft, and theatre, concerned with how clothing and accessories are designed and made to serve the narrative and aesthetic demands of stage and screen productions. Costume is not merely clothing: it communicates character, period, social status, and emotional state to audiences, and the skills needed to realise a costume designer's vision in fabric and materials are among the most technically demanding in any creative production context. The discipline draws on history of dress, pattern cutting, construction techniques, dyeing and finishing, and an understanding of how garments read under stage lighting and in front of cameras. At the University of the Arts, London, this programme combines design thinking with craft skill, preparing you to work as a costume-maker or designer-maker across theatre, film, television, and opera. You will develop technical construction skills alongside design awareness, historical knowledge of dress, and the professional understanding needed to work in real production environments. A sandwich placement year and work placements are included in the three-year full-time degree, giving you substantial professional experience within a highly specialised and competitive field. The programme also offers the opportunity to study abroad short-term over the summer break, subject to meeting requirements. Graduates of costume for performance programmes work as costume makers, wardrobe supervisors, costume designers, buyers, and dyers in theatre, film, television, opera, and live entertainment. The combination of technical craft and design awareness developed at UAL is highly respected in the industry, and graduates work across the full range of production scales, from community theatre to major commercial productions. Many develop portfolio careers that combine making with other roles in costume management, teaching, or historical textile research.
