BA Creative Writing and Drama
About this course
Creative writing and drama together offer a training in the full range of storytelling craft, from the solitary act of writing on the page to the collaborative art of bringing text to life in performance. Creative writing develops your ability to work in fiction, poetry, scriptwriting, and other forms, learning to use language with precision and intention. Drama extends that work into the physical and spatial dimensions of theatre, asking how a piece of text becomes an event, and how performers, directors, and audiences together create meaning. The two disciplines are deeply complementary, and studying them in combination gives you a richer understanding of both. At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year full-time programme is set in a city with a distinctive and celebrated literary and theatrical culture. You will be taught by writers, poets, and academics who are closely connected to the local writing and performance communities, and who bring their own creative practice into the classroom. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, all of which provide professional and international experience alongside your studies. You will workshop your own writing, develop your practice in drama through studio exercises and performance, and study the history and theory of both forms. The skills you develop through this combination are unusually transferable. The discipline of writing clearly and compellingly, the capacity for creative problem-solving, the ability to collaborate and to present ideas with confidence, and the critical awareness of how language and form shape meaning are all capacities that employers across many sectors value. Graduates go on to careers in writing, theatre, education, arts administration, journalism, broadcasting, publishing, community arts, and the wider creative economy. Many pursue further training or postgraduate study in creative writing, drama, education, or arts management.
