BA Creative Writing and Media & Communication
About this course
Creative writing and media and communication is a degree that develops two complementary sets of skills that are increasingly inseparable in the contemporary creative and media landscape. Creative writing trains you to generate original, resonant work across fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and other forms, developing your voice, craft, and understanding of narrative, language, and form. Media and communication gives you the analytical and practical tools to understand how messages, stories, and content circulate across channels, platforms, and audiences, and how the media landscape shapes culture and public life. At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year full-time programme is rooted in Liverpool, a city of poets and storytellers with a distinctive literary culture and a rich tradition of creative production. You will be taught by writers, poets, and academics who are closely connected to the local writing community and recognised internationally for their work, bringing both craft expertise and cultural engagement to the creative writing component. The media and communication strand develops your critical understanding of how contemporary media works, from broadcast journalism and digital platforms to advertising and public communication, and how to work within and across those contexts as a creative practitioner. A sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement opportunities are available, giving you professional and international experience during your studies. Graduates go on to careers as writers, journalists, content creators, communications professionals, editors, publicists, scriptwriters, and arts administrators, across publishing, broadcasting, digital media, the charity sector, and the creative industries. The combination of creative writing skills and media understanding is particularly valuable in roles that require both original expression and strategic communication, and many graduates build careers that draw on both dimensions of the degree. Postgraduate study in creative writing, journalism, or media studies is a natural route for those who wish to develop their practice or expertise further.
