BA Creative Writing and Modern Languages
About this course
Creative Writing and Modern Languages is a degree that brings together two forms of intense engagement with language, one focused on making it and one on understanding how it works across different cultures and traditions. Creative Writing develops your ability to craft fiction, poetry, drama and other literary forms, encouraging you to find and refine your own voice as a writer while also building your critical understanding of how writers across different periods and traditions have used language to create meaning and effect. Modern Languages extends this engagement to the study of a language other than your own, opening access to different literary and cultural worlds and developing the cross-cultural awareness that enriches creative practice. At Aberystwyth University, this four-year full-time programme places you at the intersection of a broad literary and creative education. You will develop your writing across multiple forms, receive workshops-based feedback on your work from experienced practitioners and academics, and study writers and traditions across languages that will challenge and expand your creative thinking. The modern languages component develops both linguistic competence and cultural understanding, and the combination gives you a genuinely distinctive perspective on how language, imagination and culture interact. Creative Writing and Modern Languages graduates go on to careers in writing, publishing, editorial work, communications, translation, journalism, teaching, arts administration and the creative industries more broadly. The intercultural competence that the modern languages element develops is particularly valuable for writers working with international themes or seeking to reach global audiences, and for those moving into translation, language services or international cultural work. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in creative writing, translation studies or comparative literature, and others pursue professional opportunities in the rapidly evolving landscape of digital content and media.
