BA Criminology and Musical Theatre
About this course
Criminology and musical theatre is an unexpected but genuinely interesting pairing. Criminology is the systematic study of crime, deviance, and the social systems we build to respond to them, examining why crime occurs, who it affects, how society defines and prosecutes it, and what justice actually requires. Musical theatre is a performance discipline that combines singing, acting, and dance within dramatic storytelling, asking performers to embody characters and situations with emotional authenticity and technical skill. Together, they develop a practitioner who thinks carefully and critically about human behaviour and social harm while also cultivating the expressive and performative skills that theatre demands. At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year, full-time degree brings both subjects to bear on questions of character, motivation, narrative, and consequence. In criminology you will study theories of crime and deviance, criminal justice systems, victimology, and the social contexts that shape offending, developing the analytical and research skills of the social scientist. In musical theatre you will train as a performer across singing, acting, and movement, developing your craft through workshop practice, production work, and the exploration of the musical theatre repertoire. The programme includes a sandwich placement year, work placement opportunities, and a year abroad, all of which deepen the professional and experiential dimensions of the degree. Career paths for graduates of this combination are varied and often reflect the creative breadth of the degree. Many graduates pursue performance careers in musical theatre, while others go on to community arts and theatre-in-education work, using performance to engage with social themes including crime, justice, and rehabilitation. Careers in probation, youth work, social care, and the broader criminal justice field are also natural destinations for those whose interests lie primarily on the criminology side. For those drawn to both the analytical and the performative, this combination offers an imaginative and practically grounded education.
