About this course

Criminology with a focus on policing and investigations brings the systematic academic study of crime into direct contact with the practical work of law enforcement and criminal investigation. Criminology asks why crime happens, how it is defined and responded to, and what justice means in diverse societies. Policing studies examines how police organisations operate, the role of investigative psychology in understanding criminal behaviour, and the evidence-based methods that underpin effective criminal investigation. Together, they prepare you for careers in policing, investigation, and related criminal justice fields. At Middlesex University, this three-year full-time degree is led by academics with extensive experience in policing and investigative psychology, bringing real-life professional knowledge and connections to the curriculum. You will study criminological theory and criminal justice policy alongside the psychology of offending, interview and investigation techniques, and the operational realities of policing. The programme includes an integrated foundation year, making it accessible to students who wish to build their academic foundations before the main degree, and a sandwich year with a work placement that gives you direct professional experience in a policing or criminal justice setting. Entry typically requires around 88 UCAS tariff points. Graduates are well placed to apply for police officer roles, including through the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship route, as well as for positions in investigative agencies, the prison service, probation, border control, and security. The psychological and analytical skills the degree develops are also valuable in social work, youth offending, and related community roles.
