BA Criminology
About this course
Criminology is the scientific study of crime, examining why people commit offences, how society defines and responds to deviant behaviour, how the criminal justice system operates and what can be done to reduce harm and support those affected. Hull has taught criminology for more than fifty years and approaches the subject with both historical depth and contemporary relevance, engaging with current issues including the use of artificial intelligence in criminal justice, modern day slavery, cyber-terrorism and the changing landscape of organised crime. Research leaders who are at the forefront of these debates shape the teaching, giving you access to the most current thinking in the field. At the University of Hull you will study this three-year full-time programme, developing a thorough understanding of crime theories, the criminal justice system, victimology, policing, penology and the social contexts that shape offending and criminal justice responses. You will also develop strong research skills, learning to design investigations, analyse data and communicate findings clearly, which are valuable across a wide range of professional settings. The typical entry tariff for this programme is around 88 UCAS points, reflecting the course's commitment to welcoming students from a broad range of educational backgrounds. Hull's location in a city with a rich industrial and social history provides a real backdrop to the study of criminology, and the department's connections to local criminal justice organisations offer opportunities for engagement beyond the classroom. Graduates of criminology programmes work across the criminal justice system and related fields, in probation, the prison service, youth offending, social work, the police, community development and victim support. Others move into policy research, charities, journalism and public administration. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in criminology, social policy, law or social work, and the research orientation of Hull's programme provides excellent preparation for master's-level study.
