BA Criminology with Criminal Law
About this course
Crime is not simply an act; it is a social, legal, and political concept whose meaning shifts depending on who defines it, who enforces the rules, and who is affected by the consequences. Criminology examines these questions from a social science perspective, drawing on sociology, psychology, history, and policy studies to understand why people offend, how institutions respond, and what the effects of punishment actually are. Criminal law provides the formal framework through which society defines prohibited conduct and structures the processes of prosecution, defence, and sentencing. Together, the two disciplines give you an unusually complete picture of how justice works, and how it sometimes fails. At the University of Essex, you will explore how crime is understood as a social phenomenon alongside how criminal law is shaped in theory and in practice. You will examine the way justice systems respond to harm, and you will engage with pressing contemporary debates including policing and accountability, prison reform, victimology, white-collar crime, and the relationship between law and inequality. The degree runs over three years in full-time mode. The programme does not include a placement year or year abroad, which means you can concentrate fully on your academic study throughout. The skills developed by this combination are directly relevant to careers across a broad range of public and social sectors. Many graduates move into the criminal justice system itself, working in the police, the probation service, prison management, or victim support. Others enter social work, policy research, journalism, or advocacy. For those interested in legal practice, the criminological grounding adds real depth to any subsequent legal training, and the degree provides a solid foundation for postgraduate study in criminology, law, social policy, or public administration. The typical entry tariff for the programme is 136 points.
