BA Czech and Swedish
About this course
Czech and Swedish represent two distinct but equally rich corners of Europe's linguistic landscape. Czech, the language of Bohemia and Moravia, carries a literary and intellectual tradition shaped by the Hussite reformation, the Habsburg empire, the traumas of the twentieth century and a remarkable modern literary culture that includes Kafka, Hasek, Seifert and Kundera. Swedish, spoken across Sweden and parts of Finland, is one of the Nordic languages and provides access to a cultural and intellectual tradition of significant global influence, particularly in the social democratic political and welfare models that have attracted widespread international interest. Studying both at University College London means engaging with both traditions at the highest academic level. This four-year full-time programme will develop your Czech and Swedish to advanced levels, combining language instruction with the close study of literary and cultural texts, history and contemporary society. You will develop analytical and critical skills through sustained engagement with complex material in both languages, and you will build the cultural understanding that makes language competence genuinely valuable in professional and personal contexts. UCL's strong traditions in Slavonic and Scandinavian studies provide an exceptional academic environment for this rare combination. Graduates with advanced Czech and Swedish have a distinctive profile in the UK graduate market. Translation and interpreting, diplomacy, journalism, international business, the cultural sector, European institutions and academia all offer career pathways. The combination of a Central European and a Nordic language reflects the breadth of European culture and gives graduates access to communities and organisations across both regions. Postgraduate study in Czech, Scandinavian studies, Slavonic languages, comparative literature, European studies or translation is a natural next step for those who want to deepen their expertise or pursue academic careers.
