About this course
Dance as an art form is both a physical discipline and a mode of expression that communicates what language alone cannot. It requires physical intelligence, spatial awareness, musicality, and the capacity to embody ideas and emotions with precision and intention. Training at degree level takes you beyond learning steps: it develops you as a thinking artist who understands technique as a means rather than an end, and who can make and contextualise work rather than simply perform it. At the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, this three-year full-time programme is built on a strong technical foundation, developing dancers who are versatile, disciplined, and physically accomplished across a range of styles and approaches. You will work on your technique while also engaging with choreographic practice, performance studies, and the theoretical frameworks that underpin contemporary dance. The programme takes seriously both what is unique to each dancer and what is shared across the discipline, and it supports you to develop your own creative voice alongside the broader skills that professional environments require. LIPA's industry connections and performing arts focus mean that your development as an artist is always in dialogue with the realities of working in the profession. Graduates pursue careers as performers in contemporary dance, commercial dance, and theatre. Many also work as choreographers, dance teachers, movement directors, and community dance practitioners. The versatility the programme develops opens doors across performance, education, outreach, and arts administration. Further study in choreography, performance practice, or arts education is a natural progression for those who wish to deepen their practice or move into teaching at a higher level.
