BSc Data Science
About this course
Data science is one of the most consequential disciplines of the early twenty-first century. As the volume and variety of data generated by human activity, digital systems, scientific instruments and connected devices have grown exponentially, the ability to extract genuine insight from that data has become a critical capability across almost every sector of the economy. Data science combines the mathematical rigour of statistics with the computational tools of computer science and the domain knowledge needed to ask meaningful questions and communicate answers effectively. At the University of Warwick, this three-year full-time BSc is accredited and designed to develop all three of those dimensions. You will build highly developed mathematical and statistical skills alongside competence in programming, machine learning, data engineering and the tools used for large-scale data analysis. The programme develops your ability to model complex phenomena, reason about uncertainty, and design and implement analytical systems that can extract value from data at scale. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study data science at a partner institution in a different country and to broaden your academic and personal horizons in a field that is genuinely global in its applications and its talent market. Data science graduates are among the most sought-after in the current job market. Technology companies, financial services firms, healthcare organisations, retailers, the public sector and research institutions all have significant and growing demand for people who can work rigorously with data at scale. Roles include data scientist, machine learning engineer, data analyst, statistician, business intelligence developer and research scientist. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in data science, statistics, machine learning or a domain-specific application of data methods, while others move directly into professional roles in industries where data-driven decision-making is central to strategy and operations.
