BSc Diagnostic Radiography
About this course
Diagnostic radiography is a healthcare profession that uses ionising and non-ionising radiation to produce images of the human body for the purpose of diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring. Diagnostic radiographers operate sophisticated imaging equipment, including X-ray, CT, MRI, and fluoroscopy systems, and they play a valuable part in the patient pathway by providing the imaging needed to support diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. The role combines advanced scientific and technical knowledge with direct patient care. At Birmingham City University, this three-year full-time BSc (Hons) programme develops your knowledge and practical skills in radiation physics, anatomy, physiology, imaging science, and patient care. You will learn to operate the full range of diagnostic imaging equipment, to position patients correctly for optimal image quality, to ensure patient safety and radiation protection, and to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team. The combination of science, technology, and patient-centred care that the programme develops is what makes diagnostic radiography such a distinctive and rewarding profession. Clinical placements are an essential component, giving you supervised experience across a range of imaging environments before you qualify. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points, and the degree is studied full time. Graduates are eligible to register with the Health and Care Professions Council as diagnostic radiographers. Career paths span NHS hospital radiology departments, imaging centres, and private healthcare, with opportunities to specialise in areas such as interventional radiology, MRI, and mammography. Further study options include postgraduate programmes in advanced imaging practice and clinical specialist roles.
