Digital film production is a discipline that brings together the art of storytelling with the technical craft of moving image-making, asking students to master both the creative and the practical dimensions of filmmaking in an era when the tools of production have become more accessible but the competition for attention more intense than ever. Screenwriting, production, direction, cinematography, sound, editing and the post-production pipeline all fall within its scope, and the ability to work fluently across these areas is what distinguishes a well-rounded film practitioner from a specialist in just one aspect of the craft. At the University of Suffolk this part-time programme combines the main elements of production, screenwriting and film theory in a curriculum designed for today's digital filmmaking landscape. You will develop the creative, technical, critical and entrepreneurial skills that the industry demands, learning not just how to make films but how to think about them, pitch them, finance them and find audiences for them. The part-time structure of the degree allows you to balance study with other work or personal commitments, giving you the flexibility to embed your learning in the rhythms of a working life. You will build a body of work over the course of the degree that demonstrates your range and your voice as a filmmaker. Graduates of digital film production programmes work across a wide and varied landscape. Careers include freelance directing, producing, cinematography, editing and sound design for film, television and online platforms. Others move into documentary production, corporate video, advertising and brand content, or roles in post-production and visual effects. The entrepreneurial emphasis of the degree also equips graduates to build independent production practices. Some continue to postgraduate study in film, screenwriting or screen studies, while others take their skills into teaching, arts management or media journalism.
