MA Digital Media & Information Studies/Theology & Religious Studies
About this course
Digital media and information studies combined with theology and religious studies brings together two subjects that, at first glance, might seem to occupy very different intellectual worlds. Digital media and information studies examines how digital technologies shape the creation, circulation and reception of content and information, approaching the digital age from a human and critical perspective rather than a purely technical one. Theology and religious studies, meanwhile, engages with the beliefs, practices, texts and institutions through which human beings have made sense of the deepest questions of existence, drawing on history, philosophy, linguistics and social science. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad and brings genuine intellectual richness to both subjects. Digital media and information studies at Glasgow explores the impact of digital content in the arts, humanities and society, raising critical questions about knowledge, authority and communication that resonate directly with the kinds of questions theology and religious studies asks about meaning, tradition and interpretation. You will develop skills in critical analysis, research and writing that apply across both disciplines. The typical entry tariff is 200 UCAS points. Graduates from this combination are well equipped for careers in a range of sectors where the intersection of digital communication and cultural or values-based questions is increasingly important. Media organisations, religious institutions, heritage bodies, NGOs, educational charities, publishing, communications agencies and public sector organisations are all potential employers. The capacity to think critically about digital culture while also engaging with questions of meaning and ethics is a distinctive qualification in a media environment that increasingly struggles with questions of trust, authority and values. Postgraduate study in digital humanities, media studies, theology, religious studies or communications is a natural next step for those who want to deepen their expertise.
