BSc Digital Society Media and Culture
About this course
Digital Society, Media and Culture is a discipline that examines how digital technologies are reshaping the way people communicate, consume information, form communities and understand the world. It sits at the intersection of media studies, sociology and cultural theory, asking how platforms, algorithms and digital infrastructures interact with social structures, cultural practices and political power. As artificial intelligence, social media, streaming services and connected devices become ever more central to daily life, understanding their social and cultural dimensions is both intellectually important and practically urgent. At the University of Kent this three-year full-time degree develops your ability to analyse digital technologies critically, examining how they shape and are shaped by society, culture and power. You will engage with questions about how media is produced, distributed and consumed in digital environments, how digital platforms affect democracy and public discourse, and how people form identities and communities through digital interaction. The programme draws on multiple disciplines to give you a well-rounded and rigorous understanding of the digital world and the challenges and opportunities it creates. Graduates from Digital Society, Media and Culture degrees go on to careers across the media and technology sectors, as well as in public policy, education and the voluntary sector. Many find roles in digital communications, content strategy, social media management, digital marketing and user research. Others work in journalism, policy analysis, media regulation and cultural organisations. The critical thinking, research skills and understanding of digital environments the degree develops are valued across virtually every sector that operates in the contemporary media landscape. For those wishing to continue their studies, the degree provides a good foundation for postgraduate work in media studies, digital culture, communications or social science.
