BD Divinity
About this course
Divinity is the academic discipline concerned with the serious study of religious belief, theological thought, and the relationship between faith and human experience. At its heart, it involves the rigorous examination of Christian theology, the history and interpretation of the Jewish and Christian scriptures, and the profound influence that religious thought has exercised on Western civilisation across philosophy, ethics, art, law, and politics. It also engages with the challenges that faith faces in the contemporary world, from scientific discoveries to religious plurality and the secularisation of public life. At the University of St Andrews, this three-year, full-time programme approaches divinity as an intellectually demanding academic discipline rather than as ministerial training, though it provides an excellent foundation for those who wish to pursue ordination or chaplaincy alongside its other career destinations. You will engage with systematic theology, biblical studies, church history, philosophy of religion, and the practical dimensions of faith in the contemporary world. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to encounter theological education in another national and confessional context, which deepens your comparative understanding of Christian tradition in its global forms. St Andrews is one of Scotland's oldest universities with a long tradition of theological study, and the divinity programme benefits from that heritage and from faculty who are internationally recognised in their fields. Graduates go on to careers in ministry and chaplaincy, teaching, the civil service, journalism, broadcasting, counselling, academic research, heritage, and international development. The analytical rigour, ethical seriousness, and breadth of humanistic learning that divinity develops are valued across a surprising range of careers. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in theology, philosophy of religion, or church history.
