About this course
Dutch and Spanish is a combination that brings together two European languages whose reach and cultural significance extend far beyond their home countries. Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, with approximately 500 million native speakers across Spain, Latin America and parts of the United States, and carries a literary and cultural heritage of enormous richness. Dutch, though spoken by fewer people, opens access to the Netherlands and Flanders, two regions with a remarkable history in art, commerce, science and political thought, as well as to Afrikaans-speaking communities in South Africa. At University College London this four-year full-time BA divides equally between your two languages, with modules covering speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation in both. Beyond language skills, you will engage with cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics and politics across both traditions, tailoring the programme to your areas of interest from the range of modules available. In your third year you will spend a year abroad split between countries where your two languages are spoken, giving you the immersive experience essential for developing genuine fluency and deep cultural understanding. Graduates from Dutch and Spanish language degrees are well positioned for careers where multilingualism, international awareness and strong analytical skills are valued. Many find roles in translation and interpretation, European organisations, international business, journalism, diplomatic services and publishing.
