Early childhood studies is a discipline that takes seriously the first years of human life as a period of profound developmental, social, and cultural significance. It asks fundamental questions: what is the nature of early childhood? How do children develop and learn? How has our understanding of childhood changed across history and cultures? And how can we, as practitioners and citizens, bring about positive change in the lives of young children and their families? The answers draw on psychology, sociology, health science, education theory, and philosophy, making it one of the genuinely interdisciplinary subjects in higher education. At Edge Hill University this part-time programme is designed to fit around other commitments while providing serious academic engagement with the field. You will explore theories of child development and learning alongside the social and policy contexts that shape children's lives, examining how perceptions and realities of early childhood vary across time, culture, and social circumstance. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities are all built into the programme, giving you professional experience in early years settings and an international dimension that deepens your understanding of how childhood is experienced and supported in different societies. Graduates of early childhood studies go on to careers working with young children and families in a wide range of contexts. Many move into early years education and care, as practitioners, room leaders, or managers in nurseries, children's centres, and primary schools.
