BA East Asian Studies
About this course
East Asian studies is the interdisciplinary examination of the cultures, histories, languages, economies, and politics of Northeast and Southeast Asia, a region that is home to some of the world's largest and fastest-growing economies and to cultural traditions of extraordinary depth and diversity. Understanding China, Japan, Korea, and the countries of Southeast Asia requires more than economic literacy: it requires engagement with history, with the literary and visual cultures that shape how people in these societies understand themselves, and with the political dynamics that make the region central to global affairs in the twenty-first century. At the University of Leeds this three-year programme takes a genuinely multidisciplinary approach, exploring East Asia from historical, economic, political, social, and cultural perspectives. You will develop a diverse and integrated understanding of the region, with the option to engage with Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language study alongside the broader curriculum. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement experience, giving your studies a strong professional and international dimension. The year abroad provides immersive experience of the region itself, which is an irreplaceable dimension of any serious engagement with East Asian cultures and societies. Graduates from East Asian studies programmes work in international business, diplomacy, journalism, international development, cultural organisations, education, translation, and a range of other professional contexts where knowledge of the region is valuable. The economic significance of China, Japan, and the broader Asia-Pacific region means that professionals with genuine expertise in East Asian affairs are in sustained demand. Language skills significantly extend the range of opportunities available. Further study at postgraduate level in East Asian studies, international relations, economics, or area studies is a natural continuation for those who wish to develop specialist knowledge or pursue a research career.
