BA East Asian Studies
About this course
East Asian studies is a discipline that has grown dramatically in importance as China, Japan, and South Korea have become central to global economic, political, and cultural affairs. It is a field that combines rigorous engagement with the history, politics, society, and culture of the region with the development of practical intercultural and analytical skills. East Asia is home to some of the world's most significant economies, most complex diplomatic relationships, and most distinctive cultural traditions, and understanding it requires both depth in individual country studies and the ability to think comparatively across the region. This three-year full-time programme at the University of Sheffield allows you to shape your studies across China, Japan, and Korea according to your interests, developing a personalised expertise in the region. You will engage with the political, historical, economic, and cultural dimensions of East Asian societies, working with materials in translation alongside the opportunity to develop language skills. The programme includes a year abroad that prepares you to engage directly with the region, and a sandwich year in industry alongside a work placement, which together provide structured professional experience that complements the academic content. The combination of these elements develops the intercultural competence and professional readiness that employers in internationally oriented organisations value. With a typical entry tariff of 136 points, the programme welcomes students with genuine curiosity about the region. East Asian studies graduates are well prepared for careers in international business and trade, diplomacy, journalism, policy analysis, and the cultural and educational sectors. Companies operating in or with East Asian markets, government departments engaged in international relations and trade, and think tanks and research institutes focused on the region are significant employers. International organisations, NGOs, and the arts and cultural sectors also draw on graduates with specialist regional knowledge. Language development during the degree or alongside it strengthens your profile further for roles where direct communication with Chinese, Japanese, or Korean partners is required. Postgraduate study in Asian studies, international relations, or area-specific policy is a natural next step for those who want to develop deeper expertise.
