BSc Ecology And Conservation With Stem Foundation Year
About this course
Ecology and conservation address some of the most pressing questions of our time: how ecosystems function, how species interact with each other and their environments, and what can be done to protect biodiversity in the face of habitat loss, climate change, and human pressure on natural systems. Ecology is fundamentally a science of relationships, examining how living organisms, from microbes to large mammals, depend on and shape the environments they inhabit. Conservation applies that understanding to the practical challenge of maintaining and restoring biological diversity, requiring knowledge of both the science and the policy, management, and social contexts in which conservation decisions are made. At Edge Hill University, this four-year full-time programme opens with a foundation year designed to develop the key transferable skills and subject-specific knowledge needed for degree-level study in biology and related sciences. This makes it an excellent route for students who are coming to ecology and conservation from a background that has not included all the science prerequisites typically required for direct entry, or who want a supported transition into higher education before progressing to the full degree. The foundation year builds scientific literacy and practical laboratory and fieldwork skills alongside the quantitative and analytical capabilities that underpin ecological science. In the subsequent years, you will study the core principles of ecology including population dynamics, community ecology, ecosystem processes, and biogeography, alongside conservation biology, habitat management, and the tools and methods used by professional ecologists. Fieldwork is central to the discipline, and you will develop practical skills in species identification, ecological surveying, data collection, and analysis that are essential for professional practice in ecology and conservation management. Graduates from ecology and conservation programmes pursue careers in nature conservation, environmental management, ecological consultancy, national parks and protected area management, wildlife monitoring, environmental policy, and research. Government agencies, conservation charities, environmental consultancies, and research institutions all employ ecologists and conservation specialists. Postgraduate study in ecology, conservation biology, environmental science, or related fields supports those who wish to move into research or specialist management roles.
