About this course

Economics and Middle East studies is a combination that brings together the rigorous analytical tools of economic science with the historical, linguistic, cultural and political knowledge needed to understand one of the world's most strategically significant and rapidly evolving regions. The Middle East is home to some of the world's largest hydrocarbon reserves, some of its fastest-growing emerging economies, a rich diversity of historical and cultural traditions, and some of the most complex geopolitical dynamics on the planet. Understanding it through both economic and area studies lenses is a genuinely powerful preparation for careers in international business, finance, diplomacy, development and research. At the University of St Andrews you will pursue a structured, cumulative and rigorous programme in economics, developing competence in quantitative and model-based methods of analysis alongside conceptual understanding of micro and macroeconomics, econometrics and applied fields. Alongside this you will develop specialist knowledge of the history, politics, cultures and languages of the Middle East, drawing on the expertise of St Andrews' area studies resources. The programme includes a year abroad, which extends the full course over four years full time within the Scottish honours degree structure and gives you the opportunity to study or develop your language skills in a relevant national or regional context. You will develop strong analytical and quantitative skills alongside the regional expertise and cross-cultural understanding that allow you to apply economic thinking to one of the world's most distinctive and demanding contexts. Graduates pursue careers in international finance, energy economics, diplomatic services, international development organisations, think tanks, regional policy, journalism and research. Postgraduate study in economics, Middle East studies, international relations or development economics is also a natural route.
