BSc Economics (with Foundation Year)
About this course
Economics is concerned with how individuals, firms, and governments make decisions about the allocation of scarce resources, and what the consequences of those decisions are for prosperity, inequality, and welfare. It is a discipline that combines rigorous mathematical and statistical analysis with the kind of broader social and political thinking that connects abstract models to real-world policy. Understanding economics means understanding how markets work, why they sometimes fail, how government intervention can help or hinder, and how global trade and finance link economies around the world. At Nottingham Trent University, this four-year programme includes a foundation year and a year abroad. The foundation year gives you a thorough grounding in the quantitative and analytical foundations of the subject, which is particularly valuable if your prior study has not included much mathematics or if you want to build confidence before tackling the full degree. As you progress through the programme, you will develop skills in microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, econometrics, and applied economic analysis. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study economics in a different national and academic context, deepening your comparative understanding of economic institutions and policies and broadening your personal and professional horizons. Nottingham Trent has strong connections with business and public sector organisations in the East Midlands and beyond, and the economics curriculum is designed to be practically relevant as well as theoretically rigorous. You will engage with contemporary economic questions throughout the course, applying the tools of the discipline to issues such as labour markets, financial regulation, and development. Economics graduates are among the most employable in any discipline. They work in finance, banking, government, international organisations, management consultancy, business analysis, and the charity sector. The analytical and quantitative skills the degree develops are valued across a very wide range of professional contexts, and the degree also provides excellent preparation for postgraduate study in economics, finance, or public policy.
