BSc Economics (with Placement Year)
About this course
Economics is the study of how individuals, firms, and governments make choices when resources are limited, and of the consequences of those choices for markets, incomes, and wellbeing. It develops analytical rigour, quantitative skill, and an understanding of how incentives shape behaviour at every level of society, from household budgeting to international trade and monetary policy. For students who want to understand the forces shaping the modern world and develop the tools to influence or respond to them, economics provides an exceptionally strong foundation. At the University of Hull, the emphasis is on economics that has genuine use in the real world. The programme goes beyond theory, applying economic frameworks to current policy debates, business decisions, and social challenges. You will study microeconomics and macroeconomics, quantitative and statistical methods, and a range of applied areas that connect economic analysis to real questions. Hull's teaching is informed by a commitment to developing graduates who can think critically and communicate their analysis clearly to different audiences, not just reproduce models. The programme includes a placement year, running over four years in total. This gives you the opportunity to spend a substantial period working in an economics-related environment, whether in financial services, a government department, a business, or a research organisation. The placement year is an integral part of the degree, giving you professional experience and the chance to see how economic thinking is applied in practice before you complete your final year of academic study. Economics graduates are sought after across an exceptionally wide range of employers. Common careers include roles in finance, banking, economic consultancy, the civil service, international organisations, public policy, and data analysis. The quantitative and analytical skills you develop are valued wherever large datasets and complex decision-making intersect. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in economics, finance, public policy, or business.
