MA Economics/French
About this course
Economics and French is a combination whose intellectual appeal lies in the different but complementary perspectives the two disciplines bring to understanding the world. Economics provides the analytical toolkit to understand how markets, institutions, and policy choices shape societies and drive human behaviour. French opens access to the language, literature, culture, and history of France and the Francophone world, including sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, Canada, and Belgium, a set of societies whose economic development and policy choices have been shaped by distinctive histories and institutions. At Glasgow you will study economics to a high level, developing rigour in micro and macroeconomic theory, quantitative methods, and econometrics, alongside rich and varied French study that spans language proficiency, literature from medieval to contemporary, cultural history, film, and contemporary society. The five-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year with a work placement, giving you professional experience in an economics, finance, French-speaking business, or public sector context and the chance to put both sets of skills to work before you graduate. Graduates with this combination go on to careers in international finance, economic consultancy, the civil service, international organisations, journalism, business development, cultural relations, and roles in organisations with a focus on France and Francophone contexts. Economic analytical skills are in demand across a very wide range of employers, and French proficiency adds a dimension that relatively few economics graduates possess. Postgraduate study in economics, international development, European studies, or finance is also a natural route.
