MA Economics/Russian
About this course
Combining economics with Russian opens up a uniquely powerful analytical lens on some of the most consequential parts of the global economy. Economics gives you the tools to understand markets, institutions, incentives, and policy, while Russian grants access to a language of enormous strategic and cultural significance spoken across a vast arc of Europe and Central Asia. Together they prepare you to engage seriously with economies and societies that shape international affairs, trade, and geopolitics. At Glasgow this programme spans five years full time, with a sandwich year and work placement built into the degree. The economics component will take you through micro and macroeconomics, quantitative methods, and a range of specialist options in areas such as development, international trade, and financial markets. Russian study will develop your language skills progressively alongside an engagement with Russian literature, history, culture, and society. The combination asks you to move between rigorous quantitative reasoning and the humanistic skills of language and cultural interpretation, developing a range of thinking that neither subject could produce alone. The typical entry tariff is 232 UCAS points. Graduates from programmes of this kind are well placed for careers in international banking and finance, diplomatic services, energy and commodities, policy analysis, journalism, and consultancy. Employers in sectors with significant exposure to Russia, Eastern Europe, or Central Asia place particular value on the combination of economic literacy and genuine language proficiency that this degree produces. For those who wish to continue in academic research, postgraduate study in economics, Russian and East European studies, or international political economy is a natural route.
