BA Editing and Visual Effects for Film and Broadcast
About this course
Editing and visual effects are the disciplines that transform raw filmed material into the finished screen product that audiences see. Editing involves the selection, sequencing and pacing of footage to create narrative flow, emotional rhythm and meaning, while visual effects encompass the digital creation of images, environments and effects that cannot be captured in camera. Together, they are among the most technically specialised and creatively demanding crafts in the film and broadcast industries, and the professionals who practise them are central to the production of everything from feature films and television drama to commercials and documentary. At the University of Salford, based in the heart of MediaCity, this three-year programme gives you the opportunity to develop editing and visual effects skills to a professional standard within one of the UK's leading media production hubs. You will gain experience in producing edit and visual effects work across film, television and broadcast contexts, working with industry-standard software and hardware in facilities that reflect the real demands of professional production. MediaCity's concentration of major broadcasters and production companies means you are studying in direct proximity to the industry you want to join, with opportunities to develop professional connections as part of your training. Graduates from editing and visual effects programmes work in film and television post-production, broadcast, digital content production, advertising and corporate video. Common roles include offline editor, online editor, visual effects compositor, motion graphics designer, colourist and post-production supervisor. The growth of streaming platforms and digital content has created significant demand for skilled editors and VFX artists across a wider range of productions than ever before. Some graduates move into gaming, interactive media or educational content production, while others pursue freelance careers or further postgraduate study in film or digital effects.
