BA Education and English Language
About this course
Education and English language is a combination that brings together two disciplines concerned, in different ways, with how language shapes learning and how learning shapes lives. Education explores the personal, social, cultural, and political forces that determine how and why we learn, in the UK and across the world, developing your understanding of pedagogical theory, educational systems, and the social contexts that produce educational success and disadvantage. English language study adds linguistic depth, examining how language works as a system, how it is acquired, how it varies across communities, and what it means to be literate in the contemporary world. This three-year, full-time programme at Liverpool Hope includes a placement year, giving you professional experience in an educational or language-related context, and a year abroad, which offers the opportunity to engage with education and language in a different national and cultural setting. You will study learning theory, curriculum and pedagogy, the social history of education, and the structures and uses of language, developing both critical understanding and practical skills relevant to a range of educational and language-focused careers. Graduates move into careers in teaching, educational support, community language provision, English language teaching, TESOL, publishing, communications, and the broader education sector. Those who wish to teach in schools will typically need to complete further professional qualification, such as the PGCE, after graduation. The combination of educational understanding and linguistic knowledge also supports careers in educational publishing, literacy support, community development, and roles working with multilingual communities. Further postgraduate study in education, applied linguistics, TESOL, or English language teaching is a natural extension for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
