BA Education and Music
About this course
Education and music is a degree that brings together two disciplines that have always been closely connected in practice: music education is one of the most widely studied and debated areas of educational research, and many music graduates go into teaching as a primary career. But this is not simply a teacher training programme; it is an academic combination that allows you to explore education as a social and intellectual phenomenon while developing your musical knowledge and skills alongside it. At Liverpool Hope University, the education strand lets you explore the personal, social, cultural, and political forces that shape learning, asking how and why we learn both in the UK and worldwide. You will gain a fresh perspective on education by engaging with its historical development, its psychological and sociological dimensions, and the policy frameworks that govern it. The music strand develops your understanding of music as an academic and artistic discipline, covering theory, history, and practice. The programme runs over three years full-time and includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you substantial professional and international experience within the degree. Graduates of education and music programmes pursue careers in music teaching, primary and secondary education, music education research, community music, arts administration, and the cultural sector. The combination of educational insight and musical competency is also valued in youth work, therapeutic music practice, and curriculum development roles. Many graduates go on to initial teacher training to qualify as music teachers, or to postgraduate study in music education or education policy.
