BA Education (Early Years)
About this course
Education in the early years covers the period from birth to around age eight, a phase of human development recognised as among the most significant in determining long-term outcomes for children's health, wellbeing, learning, and social competence. Early years education draws on developmental psychology, attachment theory, child sociology, play theory, and curriculum studies to understand how young children learn and how the adults and environments around them can best support that learning. It is a field that combines intellectual seriousness with a deep practical commitment to the welfare of children and families. At the University of Huddersfield, this programme is offered on a part-time basis, making it accessible to those who are already working in early years settings or who have other commitments alongside their studies. You will explore theories of child development and learning, the history and policy context of early years education in the UK, inclusive practice, observation and assessment, and the role of play in children's development. The programme encourages you to connect theory directly with practice, critically examining the principles that underpin early years pedagogy and developing your own informed professional perspective. The part-time mode means that many students bring direct professional experience to their studies, which enriches the learning community. Graduates of early years education programmes work in nurseries, children's centres, reception classes, and family support services, as well as in leadership and management roles within the early years sector. The degree provides a strong foundation for those who want to progress to Early Years Teacher Status or a PGCE, and many graduates go on to lead or manage early years settings. Others move into roles in local authority early years advisory services, children's services, research, and policy. The programme is particularly valuable for practitioners who want to deepen the intellectual foundations of their professional work.
