MA Education
About this course
Education as a degree subject examines the processes, structures, and purposes of learning and teaching in their broadest sense. It draws on philosophy, psychology, sociology, history, and policy studies to ask fundamental questions: What is education for? How do children and adults learn? What makes teaching effective? How do schools and educational systems reflect and reproduce social inequalities? What should the curriculum contain, and who should decide? These questions matter profoundly, because the answers given, explicitly or implicitly, shape the lives of millions of young people and the character of society more broadly. At the University of Dundee, this four-year programme provides a thorough academic education in the study of education. You will engage with the philosophical traditions that have shaped different conceptions of what education is for, from liberal humanism to progressive and critical approaches. Psychology of learning provides frameworks for understanding how cognitive, social, and emotional processes influence educational outcomes. Sociology of education examines how class, gender, race, and disability intersect with schooling to produce the patterns of attainment and opportunity we observe in society. Educational policy and the history of educational systems situate contemporary practice in its broader context. Dundee's programme is taught within a university with a strong commitment to the applied dimensions of educational study. Education graduates pursue a wide range of careers. Many go on to teacher training, either through postgraduate routes or by combining their degree with professional qualifications. Education policy, research, and advisory roles in local authorities, charities, think tanks, and government draw those interested in systemic questions. Community education, adult learning, and roles in international development focused on education access are further pathways. Some graduates move into roles in publishing, communications, or the creative industries, where the analytical and writing skills developed in the degree are valued. Academic research in education, through postgraduate study, is a route for those who want to contribute to the scholarly understanding of learning and teaching.
