About this course

Electrical and electronic engineering is one of the broadest and most fundamental engineering disciplines, encompassing the generation and distribution of electrical power, the design of electronic circuits and devices, the engineering of communications systems, and the development of the control and embedded systems that operate in everything from smartphones to aircraft. Its practitioners work at the frontier of some of the most significant technological challenges of the present, including the transition to renewable energy, the development of autonomous vehicles, and the design of next-generation communications networks. At the University of Sheffield this five-year MEng programme includes a foundation year before the main engineering curriculum begins, ensuring students have a thorough grounding in the sciences and mathematics that engineering requires. You will study power systems, power electronics, digital electronics, circuits and devices, and electrical machines and drives, moving from foundational principles through to advanced topics across both theoretical and practical dimensions of the subject. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at an international engineering institution and develop a global perspective on the discipline. The five-year integrated masters structure allows you to progress from foundation through to masters level within a single programme. Electrical and electronic engineering MEng graduates are well placed for senior technical roles and graduate programmes across the energy, aerospace, defence, automotive, telecommunications, and semiconductor industries. The integrated masters qualification is the standard entry route for chartered engineer status with the Institution of Engineering and Technology and related professional bodies. Many graduates move into research and development, systems engineering, and technical leadership roles, while others pursue doctoral study in specialist areas of electrical engineering.
