About this course

Electronic and electrical engineering is the discipline at the foundation of the modern world's technological infrastructure. It spans the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical power, the design and manufacture of electronic devices and systems, the development of wireless and fibre-optic communications, and the smart control systems that make modern energy networks, industrial automation and consumer electronics possible. As the world transitions to renewable energy, autonomous systems and pervasive digital connectivity, the skills of electronic and electrical engineers are more central to economic and social development than at any point in the discipline's history. At the University of Strathclyde you will study a programme that covers the full breadth of the discipline, from power systems and smart grid technology to digital communications, signal processing, embedded electronics and control engineering. The programme runs over four years full time, reflecting the Scottish honours degree structure, and includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to experience electronic and electrical engineering in a different national and institutional context. Strathclyde's strong links with the energy and technology industries in Scotland and beyond enrich the programme's professional relevance. You will develop both theoretical understanding and practical engineering skills, learning to design, analyse and test real electronic and electrical systems. The programme develops your ability to move between fundamental principles and applied engineering problems, and to work in the collaborative, multi-disciplinary environments that characterise modern engineering practice. Graduates from electronic and electrical engineering programmes at Strathclyde move into careers in power engineering, renewable energy, telecommunications, electronics design, control systems, defence, aerospace and the technology industry. The degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study at MEng or MSc level, or for progression into research and development roles in industry or academia.
