About this course

Energy engineering is a discipline shaped by one of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century: the need to transform how societies generate, distribute, and use energy in order to reduce carbon emissions, achieve net zero targets, and build a more sustainable and secure energy system. It combines principles from mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering with an understanding of the policy, economic, and environmental dimensions of the energy transition, producing graduates who can contribute directly to one of the most urgent and complex engineering problems of our time. At Teesside University, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and work placements, connecting your academic study to the energy industry in which you will work. You will explore the full scope of energy use, from sources and generation through transportation and distribution to private and industrial consumption, with a focus on the transition to clean energy as the main driver behind policy and technical development. The programme covers renewable energy technologies, the evolution of their costs relative to fossil fuels, the global and regional energy landscape, and the socio-economic dimensions of the energy transition. You will develop both the technical engineering skills and the broader contextual understanding needed to work effectively in an industry undergoing fundamental change. Graduates of energy engineering programmes are employed in renewable energy companies, energy consultancies, utilities, offshore and onshore energy projects, government agencies, and the full range of organisations working on decarbonisation and energy transition. Roles in project engineering, systems design, energy management, technical consultancy, and policy support are all natural destinations. The North East of England has a particularly strong energy engineering sector, which is closely linked to Teesside University's industrial connections. Postgraduate study in energy engineering, renewable energy systems, or sustainable engineering is an option for those who wish to develop deeper technical expertise.
