BEng Engineering
About this course
Engineering is one of the broadest and most consequential of all the professions. Engineers design, build, and maintain the systems, structures, and technologies that modern life depends on, and they work across a remarkable range of domains, from aerospace and automotive to energy, medicine, civil infrastructure, and digital systems. What unites engineers across these fields is a common approach: using creativity, mathematical reasoning, and scientific knowledge to design solutions to the problems we face in the world today. At the University of Aberdeen this four-year, full-time programme offers a broad engineering education that provides a strong foundation across the discipline before you develop your focus in a particular area. You will study engineering science and mathematics alongside the design process, materials, systems thinking, and the professional and ethical dimensions of engineering practice. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study engineering at a partner university in a different country and to broaden your perspective on how the discipline is practised in different industrial and cultural contexts. Graduates of engineering at Aberdeen go on to careers across the full range of engineering sectors. Aberdeen's location in Scotland's oil and gas capital and its significant connections to the energy sector mean that graduates are particularly well placed for careers in energy engineering, offshore technology, and the growing fields of renewable energy and energy transition. But the breadth of the engineering education ensures that graduates are competitive across many other sectors as well. Many pursue professional registration and progress towards chartered engineer status after gaining industrial experience. Further study at Masters or doctoral level is available for those who want to specialise in a particular area of engineering research or technology development.
